Deliberate Cold Exposure Benefits

Recent studies have shown many benefits to deliberate cold exposure to the body. I’m sure many of you may not want to just jump into an ice bath just yet, but as you read on you may find yourself closer to dipping your toe in the water.

How good for you, you ask? Andrew Huberman Ph. D recently detailed in his podcast that deliberate cold therapy can be used to safely stress the body to improve:

  • Attention

  • Mood

  • Cognitive focus

  • Boost metabolism

  • Reduce inflammation

You can find the link to his podcast and his sources at https://hubermanlab.com/using-deliberate-cold-exposure-for-health-and-performance/ . He breaks down all the science behind cold exposure on the body throughout a lengthy podcast, but I promise it’s worth the listen.

One of the big benefits from this deliberate cold exposure is it’s fight against inflammation. Inflammation has been linked to many diseases and issues such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and that is only a few!

My father, Dr. Joseph Altomare D.C. has been recommending to his patients for years to ice consistently. Many patients do so religiously and many “don’t like the cold”. Much like stretching, it’s not something anyone really puts on the top of their to-do list, but maybe it’s time to put it pretty high up there! Is it a miracle drug? No. Can you potentially benefit from adding deliberate cold exposure of some kind? Absolutely. Just make sure you are doing it the right way, in a safe environment.

I STRONGLY DISCOURAGE you from just jumping into cold water plunges unless you are in a safe environment and have consulted a health professional about the contraindications for you personally. Easing into this practice safely is of dire importance and we want you to reap the benefits by practicing these things intelligently and safely. Ice packs are an easy way to get started!
